Real Madrid

Real Madrid is one of the biggest and most succesful football club in the world. The club was formed in 1902 and was originally called Madrid Club de Fútbol but was allowed to use the name Real after getting an official blessing from King Alfonso III.

Real Madrid is constantly ranked as one of the best clubs in Europe. The club has often dominated the Spanish Primera división in La Liga and has never been relegated since the formation of Spain's national league in 1928. They have won the La Liga title 29 times and the European Cup nine times. The fifthies were glory days for Real Madrid; they won the European cup five times in a row (1956-1960).

Real Madrid play in all-white strip and are nicknamed Los merengues (the whites). The away strip is coloured black. There is a rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona which is legendary and goes beyond football often involving poltics.

Real Madrid's home arena is the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The stadium was inaugurated on 14 December 1947 and has since experienced 5 renovations. The first match played there was between Real Madrid and OS Belenses. Today the stadium has seats for 80,354 people and its pitch measures 106x72 metres.

season 2005/2006

Real Madrid had a similar season to the 2004/2005 season. They chased Barcelona in the league, but finished second twelwe points behind. They got knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16, this time by Juventus. Results and final table can be viewed below.

This was the season Real Madrid signed Michael Owen for 12 million euros and managers came and went until Vanderlei Luxemburgo arrived at the start of 2005. Real Madrid chased Barcelona in the league but failed to defeat them and ended up second four points behind. Champions League wasn't a success this year. Real Madrid was beaten by Juventus in the round of 16. The same happened in the Spanish Cup where they fell against Valladolid.
